Frenship is proud to celebrate Frenship Middle School's Jonathan Sides as the March Mrs. Baird’s Teacher on the Rise recipient. The Mrs. Baird's Teachers on the Rise award is a monthly recognition program in the Lubbock area where students nominate teachers who go above and beyond in the classroom. Each month, one teacher is selected from elementary, middle, and high schools.
Sides serves as the technology, robotics, and yearbook teacher, where he is known for creating a positive and engaging classroom environment. He was nominated by his wife, Carol Sides, who highlighted his impact in the classroom and the lasting connections he builds with students.
“Jon Sides is the kind of teacher students remember long after middle school—because he makes them feel seen, safe, and genuinely cared for,” his nomination letter reads. “He doesn’t just teach content; he teaches confidence.”
The nomination also highlights Sides’ commitment to meeting students where they are, ensuring each learner feels supported and encouraged to grow.
“He takes time to make sure every student understands, even if it means slowing down, reteaching, or finding a completely new way to approach a lesson. His classroom feels like a place where mistakes are welcomed, and curiosity is celebrated,” the letter continues.
Beyond the classroom, Sides’ impact is evident in the relationships he builds with his students.
“Anytime students spot him anywhere—in a store, at a restaurant, even across a parking lot they immediately light up and have to come say hi. They want to tell him about their day, their latest project, or just to share a smile. That doesn’t happen with every teacher. It happens with teachers who make kids feel important,” the nomination states.
For Sides, receiving the Teacher on the Rise award is both meaningful and encouraging.
“I’m truly honored to receive this award. It’s really encouraging to be recognized for the work I’m doing and to know that I'm making a difference,” said Sides.
His passion for education was inspired early on by a family member who modeled the impact educators can have.
“I was inspired by my aunt, Jeanie Johnson, who was both an educator and an administrator in public education. She was someone I really looked up to, and seeing the impact she had on students and staff inspires me every day to continue to improve and make an impact of my own,” Sides said.
Sides also shared his appreciation for the strong sense of community within Frenship ISD.
“Frenship really does feel like a family. The sense of community, support, and teamwork makes coming to work enjoyable every day. It’s an awesome district to be part of, and I’m proud to be a Tiger,” he said.
He expressed gratitude for the people who make his work meaningful and rewarding.
“I’m grateful for the students, coworkers, and administrators who make Frenship such a great place to teach. Being surrounded by people who care makes a huge difference. I’m thankful for the opportunity to grow here and excited for what’s ahead,” Sides added.
As part of the recognition, Sides received a $100 gift card from United Supermarkets, a meal for two at The Texas Tech Club, and a selection of goodies from Mrs. Baird’s.
