Five Heritage Middle School students received a delightful surprise this week when they learned their essays for the VFW Patriot’s Pen Contest had earned recognition. These students were encouraged by English teachers to submit an entry for the contest, not knowing that out of the several entries, theirs would be the ones that caught the attention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
This year’s writing theme, "My Voice in America’s Democracy," inspired and challenged students to reflect on the role they play in shaping the future of their country. Middle school students were asked to write a 300-400 word essay, demonstrating their understanding of civic responsibility, the impact of active citizenship, and the importance of freedom in American democracy. Through their essays, students expressed gratitude for veterans and explored how they, as young individuals, can contribute to their communities and nation.
The Patriot’s Pen Contest is an annual opportunity for middle school students to engage with patriotic ideals while honing their writing skills. Sponsored by local VFW Posts, the program awards more than $1.4 million in prizes each year, including a top national prize of $5,000. The awards received by the Heritage Middle School students highlight their hard work, creativity, and thoughtful reflection.
Heritage Middle School English Teacher Heather Wright explains her inspiration for involving students in the VFW essay contest.
“We wanted to give our students an opportunity to reflect on the significance of what it means to have a voice in America's democracy,” said Wright. “The VFW essay contest provides a platform for students to express their thoughts about what it means to be an American and honor our veterans. It encourages critical thinking, writing skills, and a sense of civic responsibility."
The five students who were presented with awards and prize money are:
- Hyram Larson - 1st Place, $100
- Lily Smith - 2nd Place, $75
- Adeline Bartlett - 3rd Place, $50
- Rachel Lloyd - Honorable Mention, $25
- Selene Joligon - Honorable Mention, $25
Adeline Bartlett, one of the recognized students, describes the process of creating her essay.
“At first, I had no idea what to write for my essay. When I started researching, I realized there was a common theme: active citizenship and how it can influence change. I was inspired by how much teens can participate in democracy even if we aren't of voting age,” said Bartlett.
Bartlett enjoyed diving into the topic and theme for the contest. She felt very humbled and honored when she found out she was one of the winners.
“I think I enjoyed learning about the topic because I now know that youth like me can influence change just as adults do,” said Bartlett. “When I found out I won an award, I was very surprised and happy. This award tells me God has blessed me with many talents, and I am very grateful He did.”
The essays were judged by three components, knowledge of theme, theme development, and clarity of ideas. Wright explains how the students were guided in their writing process.
“To prepare for their essay, we encouraged students to explore ways they can actively engage in their communities, helping them shape their perspectives and make a positive impact on the world around them,” said Wright. “We hope our students have learned the value of self-expression, advocacy, and personal responsibility. Furthermore, we encourage them to recognize their roles in democracy, consider diverse perspectives, and develop informed opinions of their own.”
Heritage Middle School is proud of its students for embracing this meaningful challenge and congratulates the award recipients for their achievements.
“Participating in the VFW essay contest is a meaningful experience that goes beyond practicing their writing skills. It is a chance for students to recognize the impact of their voices and to understand that their thoughts on freedom, patriotism, and service can inspire others,” said Wright.
