This initiative, led by the Life Skills students, has become a beloved tradition at the school. Not only does it provide a much-needed pick-me-up for the staff, but it also offers invaluable job skills and experience for the students involved. 

The coffee cart project serves as a win-win situation for everyone involved. For the students, it offers a unique opportunity to learn important vocational and social skills. They gain hands-on experience in customer service, money handling, and time management, all of which are crucial life skills. Moreover, it fosters a sense of responsibility and independence, boosting their self-esteem and confidence.  

“We started coffee cart as a way to teach social skills and vocational skills with our Life Skills students, as well as getting them out of the classroom and meeting other teachers. Their social skills have grown so much in the last year because of coffee carts. They are involved in the planning and making of treats, giving back change when they take money and cleaning up,” said Life Skills Teacher, Abi Hudson. 

The FMS staff eagerly anticipates Fridays when they can enjoy a delicious cup of coffee as well as a snack prepared with care by the students.  

“I truly do look forward to the coffee cart, it’s one of the highlights of my week,” said Tim Reese, Frenship Middle School Assistant Principal. 

FMS believes that this not only brightens the day but also creates a sense of community within the school, promoting inclusivity and empathy among students and staff alike. 

Overall, the FMS coffee cart is a shining example of how simple initiatives can have a profound impact on both the personal and professional growth of our Life Skills students, as well as on the school's sense of camaraderie and support.
