Terra Vista Middle School Student’s ‘I Matter Because’ Art Piece Advances to State Level Judging

The Texas PTA is a group that advocates for students at the state level. They focus on family engagement, advocacy, member program and support. Through the Texas PTA, TVMS participated in the Reflections Art program.

According to the Texas PTA website, Reflections has been a staple arts program in many schools across the state of Texas for over 50 years. Through the efforts of local PTAs, millions of students have found a creative outlet in the areas of dance choreography, film production, music composition, photography, and visual arts.

Swineford said this year, her art teacher Jana Garrison, challenged the class to create art for the “I Matter Because” project.  She said Garrison asked them to put their thoughts about why they matter into their art piece.

“I just put what I was thinking down on paper,” Swineford said. “I thought about if I wasn’t here to make changes in other peoples lives, who would be?”

Swineford’s piece is a simple drawing using paper and pencil. Incorporated in the piece are the words “I was born to lead the way and fight my battles.”

Swineford said when she was drawing, she reflected on who she is and where she comes from. She said she focused on something that would be inspiring to others.

“I think art is important for students like me so that we can just get our thoughts on paper,” Swineford said. “Ms. Garrison is a joyful teacher and always encourages us to keep going.”

The final state-level judging will take place in March and results will be announced on March 15 via the Texas PTA website.
